Chapter 9

The expression on Geoff’s face told Judy she’d gone too far in berating him, hence her backpedaling. But he still had that haunted look and refused to shake her hand.

She didn’t know what else to do, so she began gathering Daisy’s things. There were only a couple of cans of Alpo left, but she had plenty at home, so no need to pack the dog food. A few of Daisy’s toys and her blankets plus her dishes should be enough.

True to his word, Geoff took Daisy for a walk. Judy didn’t know if it was really to be helpful or to get away from her. Possibly both. But maybe when he returned he’d be in a better mood.

She should apologize. Well, she had, and he didn’t accept it. Could be he didn’t think it was much of an apology, or maybe he plain didn’t believe her. Still, she should try again. They had to work together, and her going off like that built a wall between them.

You’d think she’d learn.

Geoff and Daisy made it back as she was doing a last check to make sure she hadn’t forgotten anything that might be needed.

“Ready?” He stood at the door, next to where she’d shoved the suitcase, still holding Daisy on her leash.

“Yeah, ready. Let’s go.” She reached for the leash so he could grab Daisy’s luggage.

Except that he didn’t hand the leash over to her. Instead, he looped it over his wrist and grabbed the bag with his other hand, leaving her to close the door.

The keys were still in the lock from when he’d arrived, so she took care of that, and he led their little parade to his car. Silently.

Oh, yeah, she’d overstepped.

After depositing the suitcase in front of the trunk and unlocking her side, he handed over the leash and loaded Daisy’s things.

Judy pulled the seat forward so Daisy could hop in and gave her dog a quick head scratch before settling in the front passenger seat.

Geoff climbed in about the same time and started the ignition.

She put her hand on his before he could shift into reverse. “I really am sorry. Daisy is my baby. Aside from Aunt Kay, I think she’s the only one who even knows I’m alive. I realize you didn’t try to hurt her.”

“But I could’ve. I know, not on purpose. Still, harm happens even when it isn’t intended. I’m the one who is sorry.”

There was more to this. Judy knew that. Deep inside her instincts told her this was only the tip of the problem. “Do you want to talk about accidental harm?”

“No.” He shoved the gear shifter into reverse and backed out of the parking space. Then paused. “I can’t. It’s too deep. I don’t know what would happen if I ever said the words out loud. Please let it go.”

Judy leaned back in her seat. “If that’s what you want.”

“It is. I appreciate your willingness to listen. But you can’t understand the can of worms you’d be opening.”

She sighed. He had no idea the things she’d read about for her column.
